GLC Recap: January 2023
GLC’s January meeting was the annual mentorship night! GLC’s members look forward to mentorship night as a great opportunity to practice our networking skills, meet with women of interesting professions, and always learn a lot. The virtual meeting was set up in the model of speed-dating — the GLC members moved through several zoom breakout rooms in groups, visiting one mentor for around 10 minutes. The mentors had a variety of backgrounds and careers, ranging from engineers to holding public office. Each of us had the chance to ask questions regarding their jobs and lives, as well as advice for our own paths. Finding connections with mentors who are in related fields to what we are interested in was so cool, and it was very helpful to be able to ask questions and learn more about their lives in the jobs.
GLC members also had the chance to use the elevator speeches that we created in December. At the beginning of each round with a new mentor, basic introductions were usually made — offering us the chance to share the elevator speech. The skills we practiced last month were all so useful during the mentorship night.
In reflection on the mentorship night, some girls shared the advice they were given and what they learned. One valuable piece of insight — repeated by several mentors — was to not be afraid to take a chance, whether it’s moving across the country or changing majors.
In other news, our Pura Vida fundraiser for the period pantry wrapped up this month. We appreciate API’s support for our period pantry, which we recently decided will be located at the Cherry Hill Public Library. The fundraiser was so successful; we raised over $1,200. Thank you to all who contributed!
